
Cardinals Face Northwestern in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament

Louisville will face the Wildcats for the second time this season at 7:00 p.m.
SOUTH BEND, IND. – The No. 8/9 Cardinals (12-5, 3-4 ACC) will face No. 10/13 Northwestern in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in South Bend, Ind. The Cardinals received an at-large bid for the third consecutive season and will face the Wildcats in the postseason for the third time.
In its last matchup against No. 6/6 Notre Dame, the Cardinals mounted a second-half comeback but fell 12-10 in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Trailing 9-3 at the half and after a prolonged lightning delay that moved the game indoors, the Irish scored a goal to go up seven. The Cardinals responded with a 5-0 run over 14 minutes to pull within two but it wasn't enough. Kelli Gerding and Hannah Koloski each posted a hat trick while Kaylin Morissette added two goals.
For the season, Morissette leads the way for the Cardinals in scoring with 54 points, scoring 36 goals and adding 18 assists. Morissette is second in the nation with 149 draw controls, averaging 8.76 draws a game. Gerding is second on the team with 49 points (26 goals and a team-high 23 assists) while Cortnee Daley is third on the team with 48 points (38 goals, 10 assists). Koloski boasts a team-best 41 goals and adds two assists for 43 points.
No. 10/13 Northwestern makes their 18th appearance in the NCAA Tournament after receiving an at-large bid. The Wildcats (10-9) advanced to the Big Ten Tournament Championship game and fell to top ranked Maryland 12-9. The Wildcats are led by Kaleigh Craig (49 goals, 13 assists) with 62 points and Selena Lasota (47 goals, 14 assists) with 61 points. Christina Esposito adds 33 goals and a team-high 20 assists for 53 points. In the cage, Mallory Weisse boasts a .406 save percentage while collecting 136 saves and has a 10.47 goals against average.
Northwestern leads the series 4-1 with the Cardinals earning their first victory in the series in their previous matchup. The Cardinals upset the Wildcats 10-4 at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium in early March. Cortnee Daley and Julia Wood each scored three goals in the win. Brittany Read had a career-high 13 saves in the win.
The two teams will meet for the third straight year in the postseason play. The Wildcats eliminated the Cardinals from the NCAA Tournament the last two seasons. The Wildcats won 11-8 in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament and defeated the Cardinals 10-7 in last year's tournament.
