Lacrosse Drops Home Finale to Virginia, 10-9

Cardinals lose a heartbreaker in the home finale
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 5/8 University of Louisville women's lacrosse team fell 10-9 in a tightly contested matchup to No. 11/14 Virginia on Saturday afternoon in the regular season home finale at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
Senior Kaylin Morissette paced the Cardinals with three goals and an assist while fellow senior Kelli Gerding added two goals and three assists.
Both teams finished with 28 shots for the game with UVA grabbing an 11-10 advantage in draw controls and leading 10-8 in saves. The Cardinals had a slight 17-13 edge in ground balls.
The Cardinals scored first when Kelli Gerding took a feed from Cortnee Daley at the 26:48 mark. Heidi Smith put the Cardinals ahead 2-0 when she scored on a pass from Gerding less than 30 seconds later.
Virginia put together a 4-0 run over the next 20 minutes before a goal at the 7:12 mark by Daley on a pass from Gerding cut Virginia's deficit to 4-3. UVA scored two more goals in the final seven minutes to take a 6-3 lead at the break.
After two goals from UVA's Behr out of the half and trailing Virginia 8-3 with 24 minutes remaining, Louisville went on a 4-0 run with two goals apiece from Morissette and Jillian Balog to cut the deficit to one, 8-7. Virginia responded with a goal before Morissette won the draw and raced down the field for an unassisted goal at the 6:19 mark. The Cavaliers went ahead by two before a Gerding goal 10 seconds later brought the score within one.
The Cavaliers maintained possession for the remaining 4:30 but the Cardinals forced a turnover and had one last shot by Madison Hoover that was saved by Virginia goalkeeper Rachel Vander Kolk with just a few seconds remaining in the game.
Vander Kolk had a game-high 10 saves while Louisville's Kelly Gielner had eight saves.
Morissette had a game-high five draw controls while seniors Blair Bernhardt and Daley each picked up three ground balls.
Louisville wraps up the regular season with a road match against Syracuse on April 23 at noon.
