Cardinals use five-run third inning to take command for fifth straight victory
Hairston was 3-for-3 with two walks, a double and one RBI while hitting safely for the 11th time in 12 games this season. A native of Lexington, Kentucky, Hairston registered his sixth multi-hit performance of the season while raising his batting average to .404. Junior infielder Nick Solak reached base safely for the 24th straight game after singling twice on Tuesday to go with two RBI and one stolen base.
Sophomore catcher Colby Fitch added two hits and drove in a run for the Cardinals (10-2) and senior first baseman Danny Rosenbaum chipped in with his first home run of the season. Sophomore third baseman Blake Tiberi added a two-run double and has hit safely in all 12 games this season and junior outfielder Corey Ray matched a career-high with four stolen bases while scoring twice.
On the mound, McClure improved to 3-0 on the season allowing one earned run, the first run the native of Mentor, Ohio has surrendered this season, on four hits with two strikeouts in five innings. McClure has a 0.56 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 16.0 innings this season, while opposing batters are hitting just .132 against him. A group of five Louisville relievers followed McClure on Tuesday, highlighted by junior righty Zack Burdi registering 100 mph on the Patterson Stadium radar gun and ringing up two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning.
Tuesday's performance marked the eighth time this season Louisville has allowed two or fewer earned runs in a game. Offensively, it was the sixth time this season the Cardinals have scored 10 or more runs in a game.
The visiting Lancers (7-5) opened the scoring on Tuesday plating their only run of the game in the top of the first on a two-out RBI single to center from designated hitter Alex Lewis. The Cardinals quickly answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI groundout from Solak to score Ray, who started the inning with a leadoff walk and stole second and third before scoring.
Louisville gained command of Tuesday's game with a five-run third inning, the sixth time this season they have scored four or more runs in a single inning. Solak started the scoring again for the Cardinals with an RBI single to score Ray, who singled and stole two bases earlier in the inning before scoring his 19th run of the season. Junior outfielder Logan Taylor scored the second run of the inning going home from third on balk by Longwood starter Zach Potojecki. Tiberi added his two-run double to right center to score Solak and sophomore designated hitter Brendan McKay before scoring the final run of the inning on junior outfielder Colin Lyman's RBI sacrifice fly to right.
The Cardinals extended the lead to 8-1 in the seventh on the solo home run by Rosenbaum and a RBI sacrifice fly to center from Ray. The home run was the sixth of his career for Rosenbaum. Louisville completed its scoring with a pair of runs in the eighth inning on a RBI single by Fitch and a RBI single from Hairston.
Up next, No. 4 Louisville will open its 2016 ACC schedule with a three-game series at home against Notre Dame, which begins Friday at 3 p.m., ET at Jim Patterson Stadium. The Cardinals and Fighting Irish are also slated for Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m., each day and admission is free throughout the weekend.
