Three Cardinals finish the game with hat tricks
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 15/16 Louisville lacrosse team opened the 2016 season with a 14-6 win over Marquette at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Â Senior Cortnee Daley and sophomores Julia Wood and Jillian Balog each recorded hat tricks to lead the Cardinals.
"Overall I am excited, we overcame some of those first game jitters and had a good offensive run there that I think secured the game for us," said head coach Kellie Young. "We were a little messy at times and as we move forward and into ACC play we need to clean some of that up."
The Cardinals scored six straight goals over a critical span of nearly 16 minutes late in the second half, taking a 14-4 lead and putting the game out of reach for the Golden Eagles. Wood kicked of the scoring run with a free position goal. Then Balog scored two straight goals, for her first career hat trick. Senior Kelli Gerding and junior Hannah Koloski scored unassisted goals to push the lead to 13-4. Then freshman Meghan Siverson scored her first collegiate goal to cap the 6-0 scoring run.Â
Sophomore keeper Brittany Read held the Golden Eagles at bay, making 12 saves in the winning effort. Louisville finished the game with a 35-27 shot advantage, including a 22-18 shots on goal advantage.Â
The Cardinals were dominate in draw controls with a 17-5 advantage. Senior Kaylin Morissette led the Cardinals with 12 draw controls. Louisville finished the game with 21 ground balls, led by Read and Morissette with five apiece. Â
Marquette opened the game with a goal at the 27:11 mark with a free position shot. Louisville then scored four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead. Morissette scored first for the Cardinals off a free position shot. Then Morissette found Daley for the second goal. Balog and Wood both scored for a 4-1 Louisville lead.Â
Marquette broke the scoring drought with a goal in the 13th minute. Louisville answered with a 3-0 run to end the half for a 7-2 lead at the break. Gerding, Wood and Daley scored the final three goals of the half.  Â
Marquette held a 14-11 halftime lead in shots, including 10-8 in shots on goal.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 12 at Temple for at 3:00 p.m. start.  Â
