LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville is continually looking to compete against NCAA Championship-level women's golf programs when setting up its schedule, and the Cardinals won't balk at the opportunity even if it means leaving the country.
In a tournament that is deemed one of the most competitive in the collegiate ranks, the Cardinals are preparing for a three-day tournament from Sunday through Tuesday at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The field features nine programs in the top-30 nationally, the event will be held at the Rio Mar Country Club River Course, is a par-72, 6,203 course that was designed by Greg Norman.
"This is a great opportunity to see where you stand with great teams early in the year," head coach Courtney Trimble said. "You find out what you need to work on, and you're guaranteed warm weather and good conditions."
Louisville, which is rated 32nd in the latest Golfstat rankings, opened the spring campaign with a dual-match victory over Kentucky on Jan. 31. The Cardinals used a strong, second-round performance to earn a 16-stroke win. Laura Restrepo secured the individual win with a 2-over-par 146, and six total Cardinals – including Jacqueline Twitty, who played as an individual – finished in the top 10. Shannon Gramley, Katie Mitchell, and Twitty tied for third at 8-over-par 152.
Restrepo will play in the top spot at the tournament, followed by Mitchell, Gramley, Twitty, and Molly Skapik.
"Because we have the depth, they've all been pushed over the break to work hard," Trimble said of the nearly four-month collegiate break in competition. "It raises everybody's level of play. As a group, we're more prepared to get where we want to be at the end of the spring."
Through the fall and one spring event, Mitchell boasts a team-best 73.31-stroke average. She has four top-10 finishes along five rounds even or below par. Restrepo, who also has achieved at least par in five rounds, is narrowly behind with a 73.38-stroke average. Of the five-player lineup, Gramley has the third-best average at 75.85.
Live scoring on each of the three days is available through BirdieFire.com.
