Cards stay perfect in doubles play on the weekend
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville picked up 12 wins on day two of the Louisville Tennis Classic Saturday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Â
"Today was another good day," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "We didn't lose a doubles match throughout the tournament – I can't remember the last time that's happened. In singles, we got pressed in some spots, but we came through in all of them, so that was good to see. The players responded well to a bit of adversity and found a way to get some wins. The thing I like about this team is that they don't have a big lapse in concentration. The first two days have been good, hopefully we will finish the tournament strong tomorrow."
Â
For the second straight day, the Cardinals swept through both sets of doubles matchups to finish the weekend with a perfect doubles mark. Juniors Mariana Humberg and Abbie Pahz teamed to beat Miami's Nellie Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina 6-4 at No. 1 and followed with a 6-2 victory against Virginia Tech's Emily Pence and Luisa Uscocovich at the three-spot.
Â
Senior Olivia Boesing paired with sophomore Sena Suswam for a 6-2 win over Miami's Andreea Badleanu and Anzhelika Shapovalova at No. 2 and went on to defeat Virginia Tech's Nancy Ghanem and Sansitha Nandakumar 6-4 in their second match of the day.
Â
Juniors Ariana Rodriguez and Jessie Paul beat Miami's Hannah Shetyn and Emily Struble 6-3 at No. 3 and moved to the two-spot against Virginia Tech when they registered a 6-4 win decision against McKenzie Collins and Katherine Butler.
Â
In singles action, the Cards won six of seven matchups against Virginia Tech. Pahz battled Sansitha Nandakumar to a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 victory at No. 1. Sophomore Tiffany Huber defeated Sarah Baron 6-4, 6-1 at the two-spot. Humberg beat Ghanem 6-0, 6-3 at the three-position. Boesing posted a 6-2, 6-2 decision against McKenzie Collins at No. 4. Senior Elle Stokes topped Emily Pence 6-3, 6-1 at the five-spot and Suswam rounded out Louisville's singles victories with a 6-4, 6-4 decision against Luisa Uscocovich.
Â
The tournament will conclude on Sunday starting with singles play between Memphis and Virginia Tech at 9 a.m. Louisville will face Miami (Ohio) in singles at 11 a.m.
