Women's Tennis Wins 5-2 in Spring Opener with Tennessee Martin
January 21, 2017 | Women's Tennis
Cards win doubles and four of six singles.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In the spring season opener, the University of Louisville women's tennis team topped UT Martin, 5-2. The Cards got off on the right foot by winning the doubles point and then took four of the six singles points at the Bass Rudd Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
Â
"I felt like we were good for a first match," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "Obviously there were some nerves that may have affected how cleanly we played. We practiced cleanly all week and I thought to myself, 'we are going to play some really good tennis' and I was excited. I am still excited even though we didn't quite play as well as we did in practice. UT-Martin has a couple of spots where they are very, very good and they pushed us. I would have liked to have seen a little cleaner play throughout, I thought we looked good in terms of getting the win. I feel like we are in a good spot."
Â
Louisville won all three doubles matches. Â At No. 1 Mariana Humberg and Abbie Pahz defeated Sara Candeloro and Jemima Potter, 6-3, at No. 2 Sena Suswam and Olivia Boesing topped Hitomi Baito and Burcu Tari, 6-3, and Ariana Rodriguez and Jessica Paul beat Andrea Plantada Cortes and Asel Jumamukhambetova, 6-2 at No. 3.
Strong play carried over into singles for the Cards as Mariana Humberg defeated Jamima Potter, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3, Aleksandra Mally knocked off Burcu Tari, 6-1, 6-1 at No.4, and Olivia Boesing beat Andrea Plantada Cores, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. At No. 6, Tiffany Huber pushed past Elina Geut, 6-0, 6-2. Sena Suswam fell to Sarah Candeloro, 2-6, 5-7, and Abbie Pahz dropped the match 5-7, 6-4, 4-10, to Hitomi Naito for the Cards only two lost points on the day.

Louisville is back in action later this afternoon, taking on Murray State, at 4:00 pm.
