Tate Schmitt scores third goal of the season as Cardinals’ unbeaten streak ends at eight
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Tate Schmitt scored his third goal of the season but it was not enough as a second half penalty kick proved to be the difference in the No. 4 Louisville men's soccer team's 2-1 loss to No. 9 Indiana on Tuesday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Just 52 seconds into the second half, with the score even at 1-1, the Cardinals (9-2-2) were whistled for a foul inside the 18-yard box and Trevor Swartz connected on the ensuing penalty kick to push the Hoosiers (8-1-4) into the lead for good. The loss ended Louisville's eight-match unbeaten streak and was the Cardinals' first setback at home this season (6-1-1).
Louisville suffered its first loss since Sept. 6 despite finishing with a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in attempts on-goal. The Cardinals also had a 7-0 margin in corner kick chances.
"I think it was a matter of not finishing the chances we had and I thought we controlled big portions of the games," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "We talk to our guys about how fragile the season, especially when you're playing good teams, and how giving away goals can cost you. I think our effort was very good but against good teams, if you give away goals, you can pay for it."
Indiana opened the scoring Tuesday when Grant Lillard received a cross from Jeremiah Gutjahr and scored inside the far right post in the 12th minute. The goal was the second of the season for Lillard, while the assist was Gutjahr's first.
The Cardinals answered less than six minutes later after Schmitt connected on a header from eight yards out to even the score at 1-1 in the 18th minute. Junior Tim Kubel setup the chance with a cross into the center of the box, where Schmitt finished inside the left post for his 10th career goal. The assist for Kubel was his eighth of the season and the 16th of this collegiate career.
The scored remained even into halftime before the game-changing PK in the opening minute of the second half. The penalty kick for the Hoosiers was the first of the season surrendered by Louisville. The two goals allowed by the Cardinals were a season-high.
"I think the best part of tonight is that it's a good lesson for us. I think Indiana will be an NCAA Tournament team and that's the kind of team you'll see in the Sweet Sixteen or the Elite Eight," said Lolla. "I think it's humbling, understanding that we can be beat if we're not disciplined and we're not doing the right things. I think we'll use this to refocus, resharpen and recommit to the task."
Up next, No. 4 Louisville returns to ACC action with a visit to No. 7 Wake Forest on Saturday at 7 p.m., ET.
