Louisville Drops Overtime Decision to Saint Louis

Kubel, Johnson score goals for the Cardinals, who host Virginia Tech on Friday night
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After connecting for the game-tying goal with just 1:16 left in regulation, the 10th-ranked Louisville men's soccer team suffered a disappointing 3-2 overtime loss to visiting Saint Louis on Tuesday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
With 3:38 remaining in the first 10-minute overtime period, Saint Louis (3-1-0) found the game-clinching goal when David Graydon's free kick into the box deflected off a Louisville defender and caromed into the goal. The loss halted the three-game unbeaten streak for the Cardinals (3-2-1), who next resume conference action with their ACC home-opener against Virginia Tech on Friday at 7 p.m., ET at Lynn Stadium.
"It's disappointing but the result is less disappointing than how we played. We've put together some pretty good games so far this year, but today, we didn't show up," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "We didn't have the energy. We weren't sharp. The mentality wasn't good and we were playing a good enough team that made us pay for it. As I said to the guys after the game, we will either learn a lesson or relive them. We have to find a better way to start games and have more energy."
Sophomore Tim Kubel and junior Andrew Brody scored goals for the Cardinals, who twice answered deficits to even the score before allowing the clinching goal. It marked the first time this season Louisville had allowed more than one goal in a match. The trio of goals for Saint Louis are the most scored on the Cardinals since a 3-2 overtime loss at Notre Dame on Oct. 10, 2014.
The Billikens opened the scoring on Tuesday night when Faik Hajderovic completed a run down the left side of the field, working through the Louisville defense, before finding the back of the goal inside the left post in the 27th minute. It was the first goal of the season for Hajderovic.
After carrying the deficit through halftime, Louisville evened the score in the 50th minute when Kubel scored on a penalty kick for his first goal of the season and the eighth of his collegiate career. The PK chance was created after Louisville's Daniel Johnson was fouled inside the top of the 18-yard box.
Saint Louis regained the lead at 2-1 less than six minutes later when Vince Cicciarelli put a foot on a loose ball and scored from 10 yards out in the 55th minute. The goal was the team-leading fourth of the season for Cicciarelli.
With time expiring, Louisville found the equalizer in the 89th minute when Brody connected on a header from six yards out to even the score at 2-2. The chance started with a short cross into the center of the box by freshman Danny Reynolds, who was credited with his second assist of the season. Leaping into the air, Brody split a pair of Billikens to head the ball past SLU goalkeeper Sascha Otte for his second goal of the season and the eighth of his Louisville career.
Despite the momentum of the late goal, Louisville dropped to 3-2 at home this season. Saint Louis closed the night with a 10-9 advantage in shots, including an 8-4 edge on goal, and finished with 4-0 margin in corner kick chances.
Tuesday's match was a rematch of last year's NCAA Championship second round match won by the Cardinals, 2-1 in Louisville.
