Shane Campbell scores second goal as a Cardinal; Jamilloux makes six saves in first start
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior Shane Campbell scored his first goal of the season to help the 10th-ranked Louisville men's soccer team to a 1-1 draw against Virginia Tech on Friday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
With the Cardinals (3-2-2, 0-0-2 ACC) facing a 1-0 deficit and playing a man down after red card in the 60th minute of action, Campbell gathered a loose ball off the hands of Hokies (3-2-1, 0-1-1 ACC) goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard and connected for the equalizer in the 75th minute. After sophomore Tim Kubel's cross from the right side of the box pushed Lundgaard beyond the left post and near the endline, the ball caromed off the gloves of the Tech goalkeeper and landed at the feet of Campbell. Working from a very tight angle along the endline, the Louisville defender scored inside the far right post for his first goal of the season and the second of his career. Campbell also became the seventh different Cardinal to score a goal this season.
Defensively, junior goalkeeper Theo Jamilloux finished with six saves, including a pair of spectacular stops late in the match, in his first start and action of the season. Friday marked Louisville's third straight overtime match, including the second ACC draw in as many outings.
"One of the things that is very evident is that we are a team that will fight. The lesson for us and what we have to continue to learn is that when we're cornered, we will fight our way out of it but we have to learn how to fight in pursuit rather than getting out of something," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "I was happy for Theo because at the beginning of the season, he wasn't sharp and was coming off an injury, but he's earned his way onto the field."
After the two teams played a scoreless opening half, Virginia Tech delivered the first goal of the night in the 54th minute when Merlin Baus connected for his third goal of the season with a free kick from 28 yards out. The Hokies sophomore sent the kick around the Louisville wall and curled it inside the left post for his team-leading third goal of the season.
About six minutes later, the Cardinals chances at matching the Tech goal appeared to take a hit when freshman Watterson Young was whistled for a red card at the 59:55 mark of the match creating an 11-10 advantage for the Hokies. However, Louisville increased its attacking pressure before Campbell delivered the tying goal less than 15 minutes after the red card.
During the two, 10-minute overtime periods, Virginia Tech used its one-man advantage to organize a 5-1 edge in shots, including a pair of attempts on goal that were successfully turned away by Jamilloux. For the match, the Hokies had a 16-9 advantage in shots, including a 7-3 margin on goal. The Cardinals closed the evening with a season high for corner kick chances finishing with a 10-6 edge over Tech.
Up next, Louisville hosts Memphis for a non-conference tilt on Tuesday at 7 p.m., ET at Lynn Stadium.
