Josh Rogers was among three Louisville players taken in the MLB Draft on Wednesday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville infielder Sutton Whiting and lefthanded pitchers Josh Rogers and Robert Strader as well as a pair of prep signees were selected during the final day of the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday.
Rogers, a sophomore from New Albany, Ind., was chosen in the 11th round (333rd overall) by the New York Yankees, while Strader, a sophomore from Louisville, was taken in the 12th round (373rd overall) by the Baltimore Orioles. A senior from New Wilmington, Pa., Whiting was selected in the 24th round (713th overall) by the Chicago. During Dan McDonnell's nine years as head coach, Louisville has produced 52 Major League Baseball draft selections, including a school record 10 in 2010 and eight more in 2014.
The Cardinals' prep signees selected on Wednesday included righthanded pitcher Bryan Hoeing (Batesville, Ind./Batesville HS) going in the 32nd round to the Arizona Diamondbacks and righty Riley Thompson (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy of Louisville) in the 37th round to the Cincinnati Reds. Wednesday's group of selections joined Louisville junior righthander Kyle Funkhouser, who was chosen 35th overall during the first round of the 2015 MLB Draft on Monday night.
An All-ACC Second Team selection while pitching in Louisville's weekend rotation through the 2015 season, Rogers was 8-1 with a 3.36 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 93.2 innings pitched. In seven of his 16 starts, Rogers allowed less than two earned runs highlighted by his seven innings of shutout work in a win at Virginia on April 6.
Strader made 20 appearances on the mound in 2015 with all of those coming in relief for the Cardinals. While winning his only decision of the season, he finished with a 1.27 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 21.1 innings of work.
A two-year team captain and an All-ACC First Team selection in 2015, Whiting hit .302 with 39 runs scored, 13 doubles, 27 RBI, 38 walks and 15 stolen bases during his senior season. He closed his collegiate career at Louisville ranked fourth in career stolen bases with 79 while playing in 208 games overall, including 185 starts.
