LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's golf team overcame a slow start on Friday afternoon and is tied for seventh through the first day of competition at the Bryan National Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C.
Louisville, through the first round, is seven strokes off the lead with a 16-over-par 304 at Bryan Park Champions Course. The Cardinals hold leads over Northwestern, Florida State, Notre Dame, and NC State, all which rank in GolfStat's top 40. Virginia stands in first with a 9-over-par 297.
The Cardinals, collectively, compiled 53 pars and seven birdies.
"We left a lot of shots out there today due to our short game," head coach Courtney Trimble said, "but we are still right in the tournament. We're only seven shots out of the lead, so we are looking forward to the weekend."
Emily Haas is pacing with a 1-over-par 73, good enough for seventh on the individual leaderboard. The senior finished the day with consecutive birdies, both on par-4 holes, to compile a 1-under on the front nine. She totaled 13 pars on the day, tied for the second most in the field.
Junior Katie Mitchell also holds a top-10 position, carding a 2-over-par 74 to tie for 10th. After hitting three-consecutive bogeys, she concluded the day seven pars and a birdie through her final eight holes.
Louise Oxner and Laura Restrepo rounded out the Cardinals' scoring efforts, producing a 6-over-par 78 and a 7-over-par 79, respectively.
Molly Skapik, playing as an individual, is tied for 75th.
Louisville returns to action for the second day of competition on Saturday, with Louisville scheduled to begin at 8:20 a.m. The Cardinals' lineup will start on hole No. 1, and Molly Skapik begins her day at 10:35 a.m. on hole 10.
