McClure strikes out six in five shutout innings for the win; Ellis scores both runs
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore righthander Kade McClure had six strikeouts in five shutout innings and redshirt freshman infielder Drew Ellis scored twice to lift McGrath's Marines to a 2-0 series-clinching victory over Adam's Army in Game 4 of the 10th annual Pizza Bowl Sunday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium.
McClure allowed just three hits to earn the win and anchor the shutout performance by the Marines' pitching staff. Senior righty Anthony Kidston followed McClure with two scoreless innings of relief before giving way to freshman lefty Adam Wolf, who had one strikeout in a perfect eighth inning. Junior righty Zack Burdi closed out the victory and earned his second save of the series with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth.
At the plate, Ellis singled, walked twice and scored both runs in Sunday's game. Freshman outfielder Josh Stowers was 2-for-4 with one RBI and junior outfielder Colin Lyman singled, was hit by a pitch and drove in a run for the Marines.
Junior lefty Drew Harrington was solid in defeat for the Army allowing only one run and striking out six in five strong innings on the mound. Junior righty Jake Sparger allowed only an unearned run on one hit in 1.2 innings of relief and freshman lefty J.D. Mundt struck out the only batter he faced. Sophomore righty Lincoln Henzman had two strikeouts in a perfect ninth inning. Offensively, sophomores Devin Hairston and Blake Tiberi had two hits each in the loss.
The Louisville baseball team will conclude its fall schedule and close the 10th annual Pizza Bowl series with Game 5 on Monday at 3 p.m., ET at Patterson Stadium. Senior righty Kyle Funkhouser and sophomore lefty Brendan McKay will get the starting nods on the mound in the fall finale.
PIZZA BOWL ROSTERS
The two teams in this year's Pizza Bowl series are guided by assistant coach Adam Vrable and former Louisville pitcher Kyle McGrath, a student assistant this fall and a pitcher in the San Diego Padres organization. Adam's Army include Daniel Little, Corey Ray, Chandler Dale, Danny Rosenbaum, Chris Botsoe, Sam Bordner, Austin Clemons, Lincoln Henzman, Kyle Funkhouser, Drew Harrington, Dylan Shoffner, Blake Tiberi, J.D. Mundt, Devin Hairston, Riley Thompson, Ryan Summers, Ryan Smith, Sean Leland, Jimmy Faul, Colby Fitch, Jake Sparger and Pat Rumoro. ABOUT THE PIZZA BOWL
Upon his hiring as Louisville head coach in the summer of 2006, Dan McDonnell immediately created an atmosphere of competition throughout the Cardinals baseball program. Whether it's through conditioning in the Omaha Challenge, or in preseason scrimmages, McDonnell believes in creating competitive situations to give his players numerous opportunities to prepare for what they will see during conference and postseason games.
One of the most effective ways McDonnell and his coaching staff can provide the Louisville players with those competitive, game-like situations is through the annual Pizza Bowl series. Following approximately six weeks of fall practice sessions, the Cardinals take to the field for what started as a one-game scrimmage in the fall of 2006 and has become an ultra-competitive three-game or five-game intra-squad series. The winning team is rewarded by being served as much pizza as it would like by the losing squad, which in turn shares what is left. The Pizza Bowl series has become an exciting and highly anticipated ending to the fall for Louisville coaches, players and fans.
