Junior Daniel Johnson scores fifth goal of the season for Louisville
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior Daniel Johnson scored his fifth goal of the season to push the Louisville men's soccer team into the lead early in the second half, but No. 5 North Carolina answered with a pair of its own second half goals for a 2-1 comeback victory Friday at Fetzer Field.
Friday's result marked the first time this season the Cardinals were beaten when scoring the first goal of the match. Overall, Louisville dropped to 6-7-3 on the season and 1-3-3 in the ACC with just one regular season match remaining. With the win, North Carolina improved to 13-1-1 overall and clinched the ACC Coastal Division with a 6-1-0 conference mark.
Following a scoreless first half from both sides, Louisville broke through in the 55th minute when Johnson scored inside the far right post from eight yards away for the 1-0 lead. The Cardinals pressured the ball into the 18-yard box, where sophomore Jon Zabasajja and freshman Tate Schmitt combined to work it from right to left to Johnson, who finished with a one touch blast. Schmitt was credited with his fourth assist of the season, while Zabasajja earned his second.
The Tar Heels answered less than nine minutes later when Tucker Hume scored with a header following a throw-in from Jordan McCrary to even the score at 1-1 in the 64th minute. McCrary made the long throw from the left sideline deep into the box, where the 6-foot-5 Hume rose above the Louisville defenders to head the ball inside the right post for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
North Carolina connected for the match-winner in the 83rd minute when Andy Lopez scored on a header from inside the six-yard box following another throw-in from the left side by McCrary. That throw was headed by Jonathan Campbell on the left side of the 18-yard box near the end line and played through traffic to Lopez, who connected for his third goal of the season.
UNC finished the match with a 10-8 advantage in shots, including a 4-2 edge in attempts on goal. The Cardinals closed the night with a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Up next, Louisville will close the regular season against No. 2 Wake Forest on Friday (Oct. 30) at 7 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. Â
