Volleyball Hosts Rival Notre Dame Before Heading to Virginia

Cards take 8-0 ACC mark back into battle
The No. 24 University of Louisville volleyball team concludes a three-game home stand with a midweek matchup against Notre Dame on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the KFC Yum! Center. Louisville will then embark on a three-game road trip beginning with Virginia on Saturday night.
After sweeping both Wake Forest and Duke last weekend, the Cardinals moved up one spot to No. 24 in this week's AVCA Coaches Poll and will put their perfect 8-0 conference record on the line as they face the Fighting Irish for the second time this season. Wednesday's match will be the first of many matches this week for ACC Sportsmanship Week, which is a campaign to recognize and promote sportsmanship.
Louisville enters the week with a 14-4 overall record and remain undefeated in ACC play after sweeping both Wake Forest and Duke last weekend at home. Against Wake Forest, freshman Aniah Philo had 16 kills and five digs to lead the Cardinals to a 25-20, 25-14, 25-21 sweep of the Demon Deacons. Louisville hit .346 for the match with six blocks and two aces. Senior Erin Fairs joined Philo in double digits with 12 kills while adding two blocks. Senior setter Katie George had a match-high 42 assists along with 10 digs for a double-double. Against Duke, Erin Fairs had 12 kills while Aniah Philo posted her third career double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs to lead the Cardinals to a 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 sweep over the Blue Devils. In the match, the Cards hit .349 with six blocks and six aces. Katie George had 39 assists while freshman Molly Sauer added a match-high 18 digs for the Cards. Junior Janelle Jenkins came close to a double-double with nine kills and nine digs while sophomore Tess Clark added eight kills. Sophomore Gabbie Wiley came off the bench and added three service aces for the Cards.
On the season, Louisville ranks first in the conference with 14.61 kills per set with senior outside hitter Erin Fairs leading the Cardinal attack with 264 kills and averaging 4.00 kills per set, which is third best in the conference. Junior outside hitter Janelle Jenkins adds 206 kills while sophomore middle blocker Tess Clark adds 142 kills and boasts a team-high 67 blocks. Senior setter Katie George has dished out 782 assists on the season and is ranked fourth in the nation while leading the ACC with an average of 11.85 assists per set. Freshman libero Molly Sauer has 302 digs (4.58 digs per set) and leads the team with 21 aces. As a team, Louisville holds opponents to a .158 hitting percentage, which is best in the conference.
First up for the Cardinals this week is Notre Dame as they battle in an ESPN3 matchup on Wednesday night. Notre Dame enters the match having dropped nine of their last ten matches including losses to Duke and Wake Forest last weekend. The Fighting Irish are 6-14 overall and stand at 1-7 in conference play. Sophomore outside hitter Sam Fry leads the Fighting Irish with 234 kills (3.08 kills per set) and boasts a team-high 67 blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Sydney Kuhn adds 143 kills and is second on the team with 176 digs. Freshman outside hitter Rebecca Nunge has 107 kills while junior middle blocker Katie Higgins adds 101 kills for the Irish. Sophomore setter Maddie Dilfer sets up the Irish offense and has 524 assists and averages 8.19 assists per set. Freshman libero Ryann DeJarld has a team-high 299 digs (3.93 digs per set) and leads the team with 19 aces. The two teams meet for the second time this season with Louisville taking a 3-0 victory earlier this season. The Cards hit .388 and were led by Fairs' 17 kills and Philo's ten kills. George had a match-high 40 assists while Sauer had a match-high 11 digs. The Irish were led by Fry's 10 kills.

Senior middle hitter Natalie Bausback leads the Cavaliers attack with 222 kills and averages 2.92 kills per set. Bausback has a team-high 97 blocks and she ranks sixth in the conference with an average of 1.28 blocks per set. Junior outside hitter Haley Kole adds 207 kills while freshman middle hitter Anna Walsh adds 203 kills. Senior outside hitter Kayla Sears adds 197 kills and has a team-high 33 aces. Senior setter Lauren Fuller sets up the offense and has 819 assists and averages 10.92 assists per set. Junior libero Lexi Riccolo has a team-high 280 digs and averages 3.68 digs per set. Virginia leads the series between the two teams 3-2 including two victories over the Cardinals last season.
The Cardinals continue their road swing with matches against North Carolina and North Carolina State next weekend.
