Hernandez scores third career goal for the Cardinals, who finished with an 11-7 edge in shots
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior Romilio Hernandez scored his second goal of the season but that was not enough as the Louisville men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 road decision to Indiana on Tuesday night at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
After Hernandez delivered his third career collegiate goal to pull the Cardinals (6-6-3) even late in the first half, the Hoosiers (8-4-2) moved back ahead for good just 2:09 into the second half on the first goal of the season for Tanner Thompson. The loss ended the modest two-match winning streak for Louisville, which had wins over UConn and No. 19 Boston College last week.
"It's very difficult playing in games like this to give up early goals in each half. I thought in the first half we did a nice job of fighting our way back into it," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "We didn't do enough in the second half to get that equalizer. We spent a lot of energy and we put them under a lot of pressure, but not quiet enough."
The Hoosiers struck early on Tuesday night when Billy McConnell scored his first goal of the season with a header in the eighth minute of play for the 1-0 advantage. The scoring chance came on a corner kick into the box, where Thompson played the ball to the back left post before McConnell finished with the header.
The Cardinals found the equalizer in the 41st minute when Hernandez fired a shot from 25 yards out, which caromed off Indiana's Derek Creviston before rolling inside the far right post to even the score at 1-1. A deflection inside the box sent the ball out to Hernandez, who also scored earlier this season at Virginia.
Following halftime, Indiana moved back ahead for good when Thompson curled in a right-footed shot from 13 yards out for the 2-1 lead in the 48th minute. Femi Hollinger-Janzen started the chance by leaving the ball for Thompson, who sent it inside the right post for the game-winner.
Louisville finished the night with an 11-7 advantage in shots, while each side had four shots on goal. The Hoosiers had a 9-7 edge in corner kick chances.
Up next, Louisville challenges No. 5 North Carolina on Friday at 5 p.m., ET in Chapel Hill.
