Gayton scores first collegiate goal in 105th minute to clinch the win; Brody adds ninth career goal
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Jack Gayton connected for his first collegiate goal in the 105th minute of action to lift the Louisville men's soccer team to a dramatic 2-1 double overtime victory against No. 19 Boston College on Friday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
With less than six minutes remaining in the final overtime period, Gayton's right-footed shot from 22 yards out left Boston College goalkeeper Cedric Saladin frozen as it curled inside the upper right corner and found the back of the net. The win was the second straight for the Cardinals (6-5-3, 1-2-3 ACC), who moved back above .500 on the season while also earning their second win over a Top 25 foe this year.
The goal was the first in 22 collegiate matches for Gayton, who equaled the feat of freshman Ricardo Oliveros on Tuesday when he clinched Louisville's 2-1 win over UConn with his first goal. Gayton's game-winning moment started when sophomore Sawyer Edwards fed the ball near the top of the box to freshman Tate Schmitt, who quickly sent it back outside to Gayton. After settling the ball with a single touch, Gayton delivered a pure strike for the golden goal and the Cardinals' first overtime victory of the season.
Louisville appeared to be headed to a regulation win on Friday after sophomore Andrew Brody's goal in the third minute of action stood as the only tally for more than 87 minutes. However, the Eagles (8-4-1, 3-3-0 ACC) found the equalizer in the 88th minute when Zeiko Lewis scored inside the right post from 14 yards out. It was the fourth time in six ACC matches and fifth time overall this season the Cardinals have played extra time with Friday's result improving their mark to 1-1-3 in those matches.
The home side wasted little time in taking command of Friday's match after freshman Danny Reynolds sent a cross from along the left sideline into the box, where Brody successfully headed it into the net for the 1-0 lead at the 2:04 mark of the first half. It was the third goal of the season and the ninth career goal for Brody, while the assist for Reynolds was his third of the season.
The Cardinals followed the early goal by limiting the chances for the visiting club. While finishing the match with a 19-7 edge in shots, Louisville limited the Eagles to only four shots prior to Lewis' game-tying goal at the 87:07 mark in the match. Trevor Davock set up the chance with a deep throw-in from along the left side across the pitch into the right side of the box, where Lewis delivered his fifth goal of the season to pull Boston College even at 1-1.
Defensively, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Casey Axman turned away a pair of shots to earn his second career win in as many starts for Louisville with both coming this week. Saladin finished with nine saves for the Eagles. Louisville finished with a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal and had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Up next, Louisville visits Indiana for a non-conference match on Tuesday at 7 p.m., ET at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington.
