Freshman scores first collegiate goal in 72nd minute; Johnson adds fourth goal of the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Freshman Ricardo Oliveros scored his first collegiate goal to lift the Louisville men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over UConn on Tuesday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
With the score even at 1-1, Oliveros scored inside the right post with a left-footed strike from 12 yards out in the 72nd minute to push the Cardinals (5-5-3) ahead for good. It marked the first time this season Louisville has won despite its opponent scoring first after UConn (3-5-4) broke through in the 27th minute on Tuesday.
Facing a first half deficit, Louisville evened the score in the 40th minute on the fourth goal of the season from junior Daniel Johnson. The match remained even until a deflection off a UConn defender from inside the box put the ball at the feet of Oliveros, who curled his shot around the defender and between Huskies goalkeeper Scott Levene and the right post for the decisive goal.
Defensively, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Casey Axman made his first career start and turned away one of the two shots he faced to earn the victory. Overall, UConn finished with a 7-4 advantage in shots, but the Cardinals had a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. The Huskies also had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Huskies opened the scoring on Tuesday night when Tyler Leeman connected from six yards out at the 26:04 mark for the 1-0 lead. The goal was the second of the season for Leeman, while Jake Nerwinski and Fredrik and Jonsson were credited with assists.
Louisville answered the challenge at the 39:17 mark of the first half when Johnson received a cross from senior Ben Strong and scored inside the right post from eight yards out for the equalizer at 1-1. Junior Andrew Brody started the chance with a ball down the right side to Strong, whose cross found Johnson inside the center of the box. Johnson worked to his right before connecting for his fourth goal of the season. Strong was credited with his fourth assist of the season, while Brody earned his third.
The score remained even through the halftime break before Oliveros became Louisville's third freshmen to score a goal this season joining Tate Schmitt and Danny Reynolds. Tuesday's win halted a three-match losing skid and a four-match winless streak for the Cardinals.
Up next, Louisville remains at home for a pivotal ACC match against No. 19 Boston College on Friday at 7 p.m., ET at Lynn Stadium.
