Women's Tennis Scores Upset in 1st Day of ITA Regional
October 18, 2014 | Women's Tennis
Alexandra Mally's upset of Vanderbilt's No. 3 ranked Marie Caseares was the highlight in a strong first day at the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals held on the campus of the University of Tennessee Saturday afternoon.
''Today was a good day with wins against Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana and Vanderbilt. With a team that is so young, it's great to get these kinds of wins early in their career," said Mark Beckham, UofL head coach. "I want it to be a normal thing to beat players from these schools with great tennis tradition. The biggest win was definitely Alexandra's win against the the #3 seed from Vanderbilt. For a freshman to beat a nationally-ranked senior really shows her potential. Hopefully we can get a few more wins tomorrow.''
Elle Stokes took down rival Kentucky's Kirsten Lewis 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (6) and Olivia Boesing beat Indiana's Stephanie Smith 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles, Ariana Rodrigues and Manuela Velasquez defeated Tiffany Tavares and Laurence Guevremont, the No. 6 pair from Tennessee 8-4.
Play continues tomorrow in Knoxville.
