Volleyball Sweeps Rival Notre Dame
October 12, 2014 | Women's Volleyball
Janelle Jenkins had 12 kills, hit .500 with an ace and two blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-14, 25-19, 25-13 sweep of ACC rival Notre Dame Sunday afternoon at the KFC Yum! Center.
UofL hit .324 with eight blocks and 54 digs to even its ACC mark at three while moving to 11-7 for the season. Notre Dame hit .038 with three blocks and had just 26 kills to UofL's 46. The Irish drop to 1-5 in the ACC and 4-13 overall. Cardinal Maya McClendon joined Jenkins in double-digit kills with 11, adding an ace and seven digs. Roxanne McVey had a match-high 17 digs. Notre Dame was led by Louisville native Jeni Houser, who had six kills, hitting .278 with a block.
"I have to commend our libero Roxanne McVey. We have been emphasizing how we need more defense and better passing out of the back row. She really delivered and covered a ton of ground for us," said UofL head coach Anne Kordes. "Her defense made it tough for Notre Dame hitters to score and that had to be frustrating for them. Our middles had a great outing and Janelle Jenkins was unstoppable today. It was a great win. Notre Dame is a big time rival and we responded well."
The Cardinals flew out to an 11-1 lead in the first set and although Notre Dame had a 5-0 run midway through, it was too little, too late as UofL cruised to a 25-14 lead. The Cards hit .484 led by the hot hand of Janelle Jenkins who had six kills and hit .556.
In the second set, the Irish came out re-energized and kept it close although they never had the lead. Notre Dame stayed within one point until the 11-10 mark when the Cards pushed back with a 6-2 run and then never looked back in the 25-19 win.
The Cards led 10-3 early in the third set and .308 hitting carried them to the 25-13 win as Notre Dame hitting of -.026 was not sufficient for a comeback.
UofL hits the road again next weekend with Syracuse on Friday at 7 p.m. and then on to North Carolina State on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Raleigh.
