LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville baseball head coach Dan McDonnell announced on Thursday the addition of two captains for the eighth-ranked Cardinals in 2014 as junior infielders Zach Lucas and Sutton Whiting were chosen by teammates to serve alongside seniors Jeff Gardner and Cole Sturgeon.
Both Lucas (Louisville, Ky.) and Whiting (New Wilmington, Pa.) were selected by Louisville players and coaches following the completion of the Cardinals' fall activities. Gardner (Louisville, Ky.) and Sturgeon (Owensboro, Ky.) were announced as captains in late July prior to the team's return to campus for the fall semester.
A Second Team All-Big East selection in 2013, Whiting hit .308 with one home run, 30 RBI, 41 runs scored and 24 stolen bases in 63 starts and 64 games played as the Cardinals' everyday shortstop. Entering 2014, he is Louisville's leading returner in runs, stolen bases, walks (21) triples, (four) and sacrifice bunts (eight).
Last season, Lucas hit .283 with five RBI in 12 starts and 29 games played for the Cardinals. As a freshman in 2012, he made 43 starts and had 46 appearances overall hitting .259 with one home run, 28 RBI, 31 runs scored and 14 doubles.
Louisville, ranked No. 8 nationally in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper preseason poll released last month, will open the 2014 season on Friday, Feb. 14 against West Virginia (noon ET) at the Homewood Suites Tournament hosted by The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. The Cardinals' 36-game home schedule at Jim Patterson Stadium is set to begin on Feb. 19 at 3 p.m., against Eastern Kentucky.
