PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Louisville junior infielder Ty Young was selected as BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week on Monday after his impressive stretch of games last week for the nationally ranked Cardinals.
Young (Coatesville, Pa./Malvern Prep) hit .571 (8-for-14) with seven RBI, three triples, two walks, one double, four runs scored and two stolen bases as the No. 10 Cardinals went 3-1 overall, including a three-game sweep of No. 15 Notre Dame. Hitting safely in all four games, Young's best performance came in the series-opening win over the Irish on Thursday when he was 3-for-5 with a career best five RBI, two triples and a stolen base. Overall, Young leads the Cardinals with a .374 average and 29 RBI to go with one home run, 21 runs scored and 14 stolen bases in 17 attempts.
This week's honor marks the fourth time this season a Louisville player has earned one of the league's weekly awards. Junior right-hander Jeff Thompson has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on two occasions while junior outfielder Adam Engel has earned BIG EAST Player of the Week accolades once.
Up next, No. 9 Louisville hosts No. 6 Kentucky in the first round of the annual Battle of the Bluegrass on Tuesday at 6 p.m., ET at Jim Patterson Stadium. Tickets will be available at the gate on game day ($10 for chairback and $5 for general admission/berm).
