Top-seeded Joao De Lucca posted a time of 1:31.51 in the 200-freestyle for the National Championship on day two finals at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.
"All credit to De Lucca and how he attacked the race," said Arthur Albiero, U of L head coach. "This is also a team win and much credit goes to our entire coaching staff, support staff and athletic administration."
The junior and BIG EAST Swimmer of the Year posted the third fastest time in the meet's history, trailing only Simon Burnett (1:31.20) and Rickey Berens (1:31.31). After qualifying seventh, De Lucca won from an outside lane going out fast early in the race and then pulling away to win by almost a full second. Berens was on hand to present the medals to the swimmers on the podium.
De Lucca, who was on the Brazilian Olympic Team in 2012, finished third in the 200-free with a time of 1:33.49 in the 2012 NCAAs.
The 800-freestyle relay posted a 6:23.84 when Alex Burtch (1:36.28), Joao De Lucca (1:34.20), Albert Lloyd (1:36.97) and Samuel Hoekstra (1:36.39) finished 14th.
