Randi Ewing had 10 kills on 11 swings to hit .909 with four blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-19, 26-24, 25-16 in The American Athletic Conference matchup Sunday afternoon in Houston.
That was a great road win to get under our belt. Randi Ewing hit .909 and that is unheard of and she came up with those kills at some really big moments in the match," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. "UH played the best defense of any team we have played in a long while. They just would not let the ball fall."
U of L improves to 8-6 and stays unbeaten at 4-0 in The American. Houston is 10-8 with a 3-1 league mark. The Cards hit .250 for the match and outblocked the Cougars 10-3.5 with both team recording three service aces. Maya McClendon led all hitters with 15 kills with her fifth double-double of the year when she added 16 digs.
U of L trailed early in the first set when UH went on a 5-0 run to go up 13-10. The Cards tied at 15 and then went on an 10-4 run to close the set with the 25-19. Louisville used .500 hitting led by Randi Ewing and Maya McClendon's each notching five kills.
In the second set, every time U of L had any breathing room, the Cougars would dig in and come back, tying eight times before falling 26-24. UH was hindered by .109 hitting in the set although Cardinal hitting cooled to .151. The Cougars did not have an answer for freshman Maya McClendon, who had seven kills in the set.
Houston stayed close in the third set, trailing by just two at 13-11 before the Cardinals busted out a 10-2 run to go up 23-13. UH's negative hitting did not help the cause as they fell 25-16 to complete the sweep.
