Outside hitter Janelle Jenkins had 14 kills to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-20, 25-22, 25-19 sweep of South Florida in The American Athletic Conference volleyball action Friday night at the KFC Yum! Center.
"It was a great match, and I thought our setter (Katie George) did a great job of distributing the ball evenly to get everyone in on the action. It allowed her to get Brooke Mattingly, Emily Juhl, Maya McClendon and Janelle Jenkins all in on the action," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. "I thought our defensive specialist, Haley Pouliezos, stepped up her game in her role. We have to focus on cutting down on our unforced errors in passing and at the service lines. We cannot afford to give points away."
U of L stays unbeaten in The American at 5-0 and moves to 9-6 for the season. USF, which falls to 8-10 overall, is 2-2 in the league. U of L out-hit the Bulls .341 to .230 and managed to overcome their own 10 service errors. Maya McClendon (11), and Emily Juhl (14) joined Jenkins in double digit kills, with McClendon added two aces and gaining her fifth double-double with 10 digs. Katie George had a match-high 39 assists.
The Cardinals took a five point lead at 14-9 in the first set but USF cut the lead to one at 21-20 but could not score again. Two hitting errors by USF and the set point from Janelle Jenkins gave the Cards the 25-20 win. U of L hit .343 in the set led by Jenkins' six kills.
In the second set, USF took an early lead holding the Cards off until U of L finally took the lead at 12-11. In a set where the lead changed 11 times, the Bulls fought back with a 5-1 run to go up 19-17 but would score just once more as the Cardinals rolled to a 25-20 win.
U of L used .429 hitting in the third set and had a 5-0 run sparked by Brooke Mattingly strong serving as setter Katie George distributed the ball evenly to keep the Bulls guessing on defense. USF used both timeouts but ultimately could not force a fourth set, falling 25-19.
U of L continues conference play on Sunday when Central Florida visits the KFC Yum! Center at 1 p.m. in an ESPNU nationally televised match.
