
Baseball Completes Preseason with Friday Afternoon Scrimmage

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 15th-ranked Louisville baseball team conducted its final intra-squad scrimmage of the preseason on Friday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium as the Cardinals played 12 innings in front of the home fans.
Sophomore designated hitter Jeff Gardner (Louisville, Ky./Whitefield Academy) finished 6-for-8 with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Gray squad to 16-8 win over the White squad. Junior second baseman Nick Ratajczak (Joliet, Ill./Gulf Coast CC) had four hits to go with four runs scored and three RBI, while sophomore outfielder Adam Engel (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland HS) added three hits, three runs and two RBI in the win. Sophomore catcher Kyle Gibson (Henderson, Ky./Henderson County HS) contributed with three hits, two RBI and a run, while sophomore shortstop Alex Chittenden (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central HS) chipped in with two hits, two RBI and two runs in the victory.
On the mound for the Gray squad, junior right-hander Justin Amlung (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier HS) earned the win allowing only one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts in 5.0 solid innings.
Offensively for the White, freshman Mason Snyder (Ottawa, Ill./Marquette Academy) was 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored, while freshman first baseman Ryan Karl (Towaco, N.J./Montville HS) was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. On the mound for the White, freshman righty Jared Ruxer (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central HS) allowed only one unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts in 3.0 innings, while freshman lefty Joe Filomeno (Cicero, Ill./St. Rita HS) had two strikeouts in 2.0 shutout innings of relief.
Cardinals to Sign Autographs, Give Away Posters at Monday's Men's Basketball Game Against Syracuse
Fans can meet the 2012 Louisville baseball team on Monday night at the KFC Yum! Center as the Cardinal players will be signing autographs and giving away free schedule posters prior to the men's basketball team's pivotal BIG EAST Conference showdown with Syracuse. U of L players will be located on the concourses in all three levels of the facility all the way up to tipoff of the nationally televised Big Monday matchup on ESPN.
2012 Season-Opener One Week Away
Up next, Louisville will open the 2012 season on Feb. 17 at 10 a.m., ET against Minnesota in Clearwater, Fla., on day one of the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge. Following games against Illinois (Feb. 18, 4 p.m.) and Michigan State (Feb. 19, 10 a.m.) to close the weekend, the Cardinals will return to Louisville for their home-opener at Patterson Stadium on Feb. 22 at 3 p.m., against Eastern Kentucky.
