The University of Louisville women's tennis team fell 5-2 to Stephen F. Austin University Saturday evening in Fayetteville, Ark. The Cardinals dropped a hard-fought doubles point and two singles wins were not enough as U of L moves to 1-2.
"We were very disappointed with the loss but it was not a bad loss by any means," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "SFA is a definite NCAA tournament team, they were every bit as good as No. 24-ranked Arkansas. So for us to play them as close as we did without our nationally ranked Julia Fellerhoff is a very good sign for our team. We are going to beat some good teams this year."
U of L was swept in doubles to start the match down 1-0. The Cardinals got their points from deep in the lineup, as freshman Manuela Velasquez dug in and beat Alina Shazhko after dropping her second set, coming back to win 10-8 in the tiebreaker at No. 4. Senior Sarah Miller won at No. 6 with a 6-4, 6-1 win over nationally ranked Malena Gordo.
