Women's Tennis Beats Austin Peay 6-1

The University of Louisville women's tennis team took the doubles point and then won five singles matches to defeat visiting Austin Peay 6-1 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center Saturday evening.
"We gave good effort today," said U of L coach Mark Beckham. "This APSU team has already played a highly-ranked Memphis team and so they weren't intimidated by us at all. So for us to get a good 6-1 win is showing progress and that is what I am looking for.
U of L (2-2) swept all three doubles matches starting with the No. 1 pair of Manuela Velasquez and Amelia Harris making quick work of Vanya Tomic and Allison Carre 8-1. Sarah Miller and Stefanie Villajuan rolled 8-1 at No. 3 with Mandy Brown and Rebecca Shine winning 8-3 at No. 2 over Weronika Kurka and Ornella Di Salvo.
Harris scored the first singles point with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Andra Cornea at No. 6. Soon after, fellow senior Sarah Miller made quick work of Vanessa Tavares at No. 5, with a 6-0, 6-2 win. Manuela Velasquez finished off Weronika Kurka 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 to clinch the match. Mandy Brown hung on to win 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 over Allison Carre. Gabrielle Duncan started slow with a 6-4 win in a long first set, but then prevailed 6-4 in the second at No. 3. Rebecca Shine won her first set 7-5 before falling 6-4 in the second to go to the tiebreaker where she lost 10-5.
"One thing we have to correct is lapses in concentration," said Beckham. "We have given away too many games strictly because we were not focusing the entire time."
