Women's Tennis Falls to No. 40 Purdue

The University of Louisville Women's tennis team fell 5-2 to the No. 40-ranked Purdue Boilermakers Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"I'm pleased with the effort today and when we play against a team as good as Purdue, unbelievable effort has to be the basis of everything you do," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "We gave ourselves a few opportunities to put pressure on them but they were able to execute in the big moments. So I'm disappointed in the loss, but our effort and level of play is moving in the right direction because that is probably the best team we will play all season. "
Despite a hard fought 8-6 win by Amelia Harris and Manuela Velasquez at No. 1 doubles, the Cardinals dropped the doubles point. At No. 2 Mandy Brown and Rebecca Shine lost 8-3 and Sarah Miller and Julia Fellerhoff dropped a closely contested match 8-5.
In singles, Gabrielle Duncan was the first to fall in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Daniela Vidal cruised to victory over freshman Manuela Velasquez 6-2, 6-0. Imogen Golder clinched the match for the Boilermakers with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Cardinal senior Sarah Miller. After fighting back and winning the second set, Mandy Brown fell in three sets to Lynda Xepoleas 6-1, 3-6, 6-0. Amelia Harris captured one of the two Cardinal points with a victory over Gisella Pere 6-4, 2-6, 10-2. The other Cardinal victory came from sophomore Rebecca Shine, who fought back to win after losing the first set, 3-6, 6-2, 10-3.
The Cardinals will return to action Friday, February 10 when they take on Furman at 3 p.m. ET at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
