LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville baseball team will begin its fall workouts on Tuesday and the Cardinals will host a Red-Black Scrimmage open to the public on Friday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Gates open at 3 p.m., ET for batting practice and first pitch is set for 4 p.m. Fans, including those planning to tailgate in advance of Louisville's home football game against FIU on Friday night, are invited to visit Jim Patterson Stadium to get an early look at the Cardinals' 2012 baseball team.
Friday's Red-Black Scrimmage will be the first of 11 scrimmages for the Cardinals this fall leading up to the annual Pizza Bowl series, which is tentatively set to begin on Oct. 12. A complete Pizza Bowl schedule will be announced later in the fall.
The Cardinals, led by the return of All-BIG EAST performers Justin Amlung (RHP) and Stewart Ijames (OF), welcome back nearly the entire pitching staff and numerous position players with starting experience from last year's squad. Overall, Louisville returns 19 letterwinners from the 2011 team, which finished 32-29 overall.
Head coach Dan McDonnell enters his sixth season leading the Louisville baseball program. In his five previous seasons, McDonnell is 217-106 with two BIG EAST regular-season titles, two BIG EAST Tournament titles, four NCAA Regionals, two NCAA Super Regionals and one College World Series.
