
Cardinals' Amlung Named Louisville Slugger Preseason All-America

TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Louisville junior right-handed pitcher Justin Amlung was selected Third Team Louisville Slugger Preseason All-America by Collegiate Baseball newspaper on Tuesday.
Tuesday's honor was the second preseason accolade for Amlung, who was named Third Team Preseason All-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Dec. 14. A Louisville native and a graduate of St. Xavier High School, Amlung was 10-2 with a 2.31 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 15 starts while earning First Team All-BIG EAST Conference honors last season. Entering 2012, he ranks second on Louisville's career ERA list at 3.06 and has a 15-4 record overall.
Following the completion of the 2011 collegiate season, Amlung was selected as a Cape League All-Star after finishing 3-1 with a 1.76 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 41 innings for the Wareham Gatemen. After successful collegiate and summer seasons, Amlung chose to return to Louisville for his redshirt junior season after being selected in the 39th Round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Cincinnati Reds.
Louisville, ranked 15th in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper preseason poll released on Dec. 19, will open the 2012 season on Feb. 17 against Minnesota in Clearwater, Fla., at the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge. The Cardinals' home-opener at Jim Patterson Stadium is set for Feb. 22 against Eastern Kentucky.
