LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville baseball program will complete its fall workouts with the sixth annual Pizza Bowl, a three-game intra-squad series set to begin on Thursday at 3 p.m., ET at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The series will continue on Saturday at 2 p.m., before concluding on Sunday at noon. Batting practice will begin approximately one hour prior to first pitch each day. Each game is scheduled for nine innings and admission is free for the entire three-game series.
Louisville is in its sixth week of fall workouts in preparation for the 2012 season. Led by the return of All-BIG EAST junior right-handed pitcher Justin Amlung and talented senior righty Derek Self, the Cardinals welcome back nearly the entire pitching staff and numerous position players with starting experience from last year's squad. Overall, Louisville returns 19 letterwinners from the 2011 team, which finished 32-29 overall.
Head coach Dan McDonnell enters his sixth season leading the Louisville baseball program. In his five previous seasons, McDonnell is 217-106 with two BIG EAST regular-season titles, two BIG EAST Tournament titles, four NCAA Regionals, two NCAA Super Regionals and one College World Series.
The Cardinals are scheduled to open the 2012 season at the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge on Feb. 17-19 in Clearwater, Fla., while the home slate at Jim Patterson Stadium is set to begin with a mid-week game against Eastern Kentucky on Feb. 22. The complete 2012 Louisville baseball schedule is expected to be released later in the fall.
