LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Following the completion of its 2010 collegiate season, the University of Louisville baseball team has more than a dozen players set to play summer baseball in wooden bat leagues around the nation.
The Cardinals have six players assigned to the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League, including sophomore infielder Ryan Wright, who will play for the Bourne Braves for approximately three weeks before traveling to Cary, N.C., for the 2010 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Trials on July 6-11. If selected for the USA National Team, Wright will stay with that squad through the summer, and if he is not chosen, he will return to Bourne for the completion of the Cape Cod League season.
Louisville junior infielder Phil Wunderlich and sophomore right-handed pitcher Tony Zych will also play for the Bourne Braves, while redshirt sophomore outfielder Stewart Ijames will play for the Harwich Mariners in the Cape Cod League. Junior outfielder Josh Richmond is scheduled to play for the Wareham Gatemen in the league, while sophomore right-handed pitcher Derek Self will play for the Chatham Anglers.
Three Cardinals are assigned to compete in the Coastal Plain League as freshman infielder Kyle Grieshaber and first baseman Zak Wasserman will play for the Thomasville HiToms, while freshman third baseman Cade Stallings will play for the Forest City Owls. Freshmen right-handed pitchers Andy Flett and Curtis McCombs will play for the Baltimore Redbirds in the Cal Ripken League, sophomore left-handed pitcher Joe Stilphen will play for the Owensboro Oilers in the KIT League and freshman outfielder Jarred Clarkson will play for the Oneonta Outlaws in the New York Collegiate League.
Following the completion of the collegiate summer leagues, players will return to campus for the fall semester in mid-August in preparation for the 2011 college baseball season. The Louisville baseball team, which set a new school record for wins with a 50-14 record overall in 2010, closed the season by advancing to a fourth straight NCAA Regional and winning a second straight BIG EAST Conference regular season championship.
