LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville junior third baseman Phil Wunderlich was named Preseason Third Team All-America on Wednesday afternoon by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
A Chicago native, Wunderlich led the Cardinals in hitting in 2009 with a .367 average, was second on the team with 18 home runs and 78 RBI and was third on the team with 18 doubles en route to being named Second Team All-America by the NCBWA and Second Team All-BIG EAST. A designated hitter on the 2010 NCBWA Preseason All-American Team, Wunderlich split time at DH and left field in 2009 but is projected as the Cards' starting third baseman for 2010.
The Cardinals swept the BIG EAST regular season and tournament titles last season to earn their third straight NCAA appearance. They also advanced to an NCAA Super Regional for the third time in three seasons and finished with a top 15 national ranking with a 47-18 record overall.
Louisville will open the 2010 season on Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. ET, in the first of three games against Bowling Green at Jim Patterson Stadium.
