Louisville, Ky. - The Louisville men's soccer team handed Seton Hall a 4-0 shutout in the BIG EAST opener Friday evening at Cardinal Park. The Cardinals improve to 4-2-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in league play. The Pirates fall to 3-4-0 on the season and 0-1-0 in league play. Sophomore Gerardo Chavez led the Cardinals with a goal and an assist for the win.
"It was a great way to start BIG EAST play," said head coach Ken Lolla. "It was important for us to get the shutout. I felt we had a lot of chances tonight and it was a really good team performance."
Louisville wasted no time at getting the crowd of 1,858 into the game. Senior Marco Terminesi just beat the defense as Chavez passed him the ball to score just inside the box in the 12th minute of play. Chavez then dribbled through five defenders in impressive fashion to put the Cards up 2-0 in the 16th minute.
The Cardinals finished the first period with a 2-0 advantage. Louisville outshot the Pirates 10-5 in the first period.
Seton Hall came out on the attack early in the second period but the Cardinal defense held strong. Junior transfer Aaron Clapham scored from 10 feet out off a cross from Freddie Braun to give the Cardinals added security in the 54th minute of play. The Pirates' Hayden Morris had a chance to score but Cardinal keeper David Simolike made the save to preserve the shutout. Sophomore Steve Sloan scored off a deflection from Anthony Celebre in the 88th minute to put the game away.
Simolike and the Cardinal defense recorded their first shutout of the season. Simolike finished with three saves while the Seton Hall keepers finished with six on the evening. Louisville finished the game with a 19-8 shot advantage.
The Cardinals will host Georgetown in Cardinal Park on Sunday, highlighting a double-header with the women. The men will kick off the festivities with a noon start.
