LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Due to an unfavorable weather forecast Thursday evening, the University of Louisville baseball team has moved first pitch of the second annual Pizza Bowl to 4:00 p.m. The nine inning intra-squad scrimmage will be played at Jim Patterson Stadium and is free and open to the public.
Dan McDonnell, who is in his second season as head coach of the Cardinals, took over the team on June 27, 2006 as the 18th head coach in U of L baseball history and guided the team to their first College World Series in Omaha. The Cards won a school record 47 games, and McDonnell was selected National Coach of the Year, as the first rookie head coach in 27 years to guide his team to Omaha.
The team held a draft to determine the squads. Volunteer assistant Xan Barksdale will be coaching the visiting red team, and they will be opposing the homestanding white team which will be coached by assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Chris Lemonis.
The game will mark the end of the fall workouts which began the first week of September. All college baseball teams will open the 2008 season on February 22.
It is expected that senior Zack Pitts, the 2007 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year will start for the red team and will face sophomore Justin Marks, 2007 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year who will take the hill for the white team.
The Cards bring back 17 players from last season, including Columbia Regional MVP third baseman Chris Dominguez and All-BIG EAST Second Team catcher Derrick Alfonso.
Many of the graduating members of the 2007 College World Series team will be in attendance Thursday.
