BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Freshman Lindsay Boling had a goal and an assist Sunday, leading the University of Louisville women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Western Kentucky.
Despite the win, which kept the Cardinals undefeated through the first seven games of the season at 6-0-1, Head Coach Karen Ferguson still felt U of L had some work to do.
"Western played in a 4-5-1 and put all 11 players behind the ball. We need to do a better job of executing against that."
The Cards pressured the Hilltoppers from the opening whistle with a pair of corners and four shots in the first 15 minutes.
Boling helped give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute when she put Lindsey Fox in on the keeper 1v1. WKU keeper Meredith Goodson stopped Fox on her first attempt, but the freshman picked up her own rebound and scored her fourth of the season, tying her for the team lead.
A little under a minute and a half into the second half, Boling netted her second of the season - both game winners.
Monique Gjini and Katie Owen combined to set up Boling for the 2-0 Cardinal advantage.
Western avoided the shutout on Vanessa Lawson header off a set piece with a little over a minute to play.
Louisville outshot the Toppers 16-8 for the match, including a 10-3 advantage in the second half, but only three were on net. The Cardinals had nine corner kicks to WKU's one.
Boling had six shots, while senior Jamie Craft added five.
Cardinal keeper Joanna Haig had a pair of saves to pick up the win.
Louisville now has the second longest undefeated streak in school history. The 1996 squad was 7-0-1 from October 4 -20.
U of L returns to BIG EAST play in an attempt to equal the '96 team when they host DePaul Friday night at Cardinal Park at 7:00 p.m. ET before heading to Notre Dame where they will face the top-ranked Fighting Irish Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
