Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville (1-1-0) men's soccer team defeated Marshall (1-1-0) 2-1 on a hot and humid Sunday afternoon in Cardinal Park. Freshman Dustin Dawes netted the game-winner for the Cardinals in the 81st minute.
"I am extremely proud of this team" said head coach Ken Lolla. "It wasn't an easy game to play physically, but they were mentally tough and persevered. Especially after the long game Friday night and to come and play well in a tight game, I'm just extremely proud. A lot of credit goes to the guys who came off the bench for us today."
Marshall got on the board early, taking a 1-0 advantage when Kolby Lacrone scored in the 10th minute of play. Then in the 15th minute of play sophomore Gerard Voutier crossed the ball to Frank Jonke for his second goal of the season. Marshall finished the first half with a 6-3 shot advantage but the game was tied 1-1 at the break.
After a corner kick from Voutier landed in the box, John Jonke passed the ball to Steve Sloan who passed the ball to Dawes in front of the goal for the score. The Cardinal defense held tough not allowing a goal for the rest of the half.
Marshall finished the game with a 12-5 shot advantage and a 7-5 corner kick advantage. Cardinal keeper David Simolike finished the game with three saves while Marshall's keeper finished with two saves.
Louisville will be back in action on Wednesday, Aug. 30 as they take on the Kentucky Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
