
Men's Soccer Ties Cats 1-1 in Double Overtime

Louisville, Ky. - The first Battle of the Bluegrass this week ended in a 1-1 double overtime tie for the Cardinals (1-1-1). The tie ended the Wildcats' (2-0-1) four-game winning streak over the Cardinals. The game was also the fifth overtime in the series and just the second double overtime.
Junior midfielder David Guzman scored from 10 yards out in the 61st minute off a cross from Gerard Voutier to get the Cardinals on the board first. Kentucky's Masumi Turnbull then scored when Riley O'Neill took a rebound and passed across the goal box to Turnbull in the 72nd minute. The Cardinals had back-to-back shots on goal in the 81st minute but came up just short. Then the Wildcats had a shot on-goal in the 86th minute but Simolike made the save, forcing the overtime period.
In the first overtime period the Cardinals had a two chances with shots on goal in the 94th minute and the end of the period. The Wildcats has a shot in the 93rd minute but Simolike was there once again with the save.
The Cardinals came the closest to ending the game with a shot from Gerard Voutier at the start of the period but Williams made the save. Freshman Dustin Dawes also had a shot on goal in the 106th minute but could not convert, forcing the tie.
Kentucky finished the game with a 21-15 shot advantage while the Cardinals held a 5-3 corner kick advantage. Simolike finished the game with 10 saves and one team save while Williams finished with 10 saves.
Louisville will be back in action on Monday, Sept. 4 as they travel to No. 1 Maryland and the defending national champions for a 7:00 p.m. match.
