Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's soccer team fell 4-3 in overtime of the season opener Friday evening against Memphis in Cardinal Park. The Cardinals held a 3-0 lead early in the second half but gave up three goals in a four minute span to force the game into overtime.
"We played well through large stretches of the game," said head coach Ken Lolla. "We still have a lot of growing to do. I have to give Memphis a lot of credit, we relaxed and let them back in the game and they took advantage of it. We lacked the fortitude to snap out of it and pick it back up. This is just a lesson for us to learn and grow from before we take on Marshall on Sunday."
In the 26th minute of play junior Frank Jonke got past the Memphis keeper and punched the ball in for his first goal of the season. Seven minutes later junior David Guzman scored in front of the goal to put the Cards up 2-0 with 12 minutes left in the half. The Cardinals went into the lockerroom with a 2-0 lead.
In the 47th minute Jonke got a breakaway and crossed the ball to Guzman for his second goal of the night. Then in the 65th minute the Tigers' Kevin Walsh scored in front of the goal to put Memphis back in the game. Less than three minutes later Jared Britcher headed the ball in the goal to get the Tigers within one.
Then in the 69th minute, Britcher scored the game equalizer off an assist from Grant Wise. No one scored in the final two minutes, forcing the overtime period. In the fourth minute of the overtime period Memphis' Jamie Gilbert scored the game winner off a cross from Walsh.
The Cardinals finished the game with 12 shots and Memphis finished the game with 12 shots. Cardinal keeper David Simolike finished the game with three saves while Memphis keeper Michael Goodlett finished with three saves. Memphis held a 7-5 corner kick advantage.
Louisville will be back in action on Sunday, Aug. 27 as they take on Marshall at 1:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
