Taking a break from their normal hectic and intense schedules, the University of Louisville Swimming and Diving teams made the dreams of local Special Olympians come true. The U of L teams' volunteered their time to run a swim meet, featuring 9 teams and 97 Special Olympic athletes at the new Ralph R. Wright Natatorium on Sunday, March 5.
"The Special Olympians were very excited to be in the new facility for the first time," said Phil Julson, University of Louisville Aquatic Director. "We had great races and everyone enjoyed seeing the athletes having so much fun, enjoying the sport of swimming."
The University of Louisville has been involved with the Special Olympics program for 31 years. The first meet held at U of L was on April 19, 1975, making it one of the longer-running regional events. This year's event also included all four athletes who will represent Kentucky at the upcoming Special Olympics USA National Games.
