Women Move to 4th, Men in 6th at BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships, Set Five School Records

The University of Louisville swimming and diving completed the third day of competition with the women moving into fourth place and the men placing sixth. The Cardinals crowned two more champions as Heather Meng and Vali Preda each earned their second championship at the BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships held at the Nassau Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y. The Cardinals set five school records in the process.
"We had two titles and made it clear that we are here to compete," said Arthur Albiero, U of L head coach. "We hope to help make the conference more competitive and help establish our program as well."
For the women, Notre Dame took over the lead, maintaining a narrow edge over Rutgers 496.5, 491.5. Pittsburgh is third at 337 followed by Louisville at 271, Villanova at 233, UCon at 209, Cincinnati at 185, WVU at 174.5, Syracuse at 144.5, Seton Hall at 75 and Georgetown at 53. For the men, Notre Dame leads with a commanding total of 511. Pittsburgh is second at 383.5 followed by WVU (327.5), Rutgers (273.5), Cincinnati (227), Louisville (226), UConn (191.5), Syracuse (169), Seton Hall (78), Villanova (60) and Georgetown (56).
U of L had two champions, as Heather Meng and Vali Preda each won the 100-breast. Meng posted an NCAA B time of 1:02.78 for the win. Preda powered to a win with a 53.66 for an NCAA B time. Both were school records for the Cardinals. Teammate Johanna Nyysti added to the point total with an eighth place in that race. Chris Lindauer was 12th behind Preda for more Cardinal tallies.
Leslie VanWinkle finished fourth in the 200-free, managing to carve time off her qualifying mark. Melanie Greyling was seventh in that race.
U of L, strong in the individual medley all year, got a boost as Abby Miller finished third in the 400-IM with an NCAA B time of 4:22.59, a school record. Leigh Smith was fourth in the consol finals.
In the 100-back, Andrei Teudean powered to a second place finish with a time of 49.82 to set a school record and went on to finish 13th in the 100-fly.
In diving, Marianne Bradford finished seventh in the 3-meter board followed by teammate Sarah Sandroni in eighth.
In the 400 medley relay, the team of Larissa Niehoff, Heather Meng, Jenny Schimenti and Melanie Greyling finished fifth and set a school record.
"In the relays, Larissa had an inspired swim in the leadoff leg with a lifetime best," said Albiero. For the men, Andre Teudean, Vali Preda, Tyler Smith and Jonathan Farnham touched fourth with a time of 3:19.33
In other races, Matt Lees was 12th in the 200-free, with Jonathan Farnham finishing 16th. In the 100-fly, freshman Jenny Schimenti finished 16th in the consols. .
