After preliminary competition on Friday morning, the University of Louisville swimming and diving team placed five swimmers in the finals and three in the consolation finals this evening.
"We had some strong swimming and some good luck this morning," said U of L coach Arthur Albiero. "We have a great opportunity to make up a lot of points tonight."
The Cardinals set two new school records in the process. Vali Preda set a new school mark in the 100-breast, qualifying third. Chris Lindauer snuck in the consols in a hotly contested race.
Heather Meng set a new school record with a blazing qualifying time in the 100-breast, placing her first going into tonight's finals. Johanna Nyysti finished seventh to make the finals as well.
Andrei Teudean will swim in the finals in the 100-back in a strong field where there was a second between first and ninth place. Chris Pinkston was 12th and will swim in the consols.
In the 400-IM, Abby Miller qualified with the fifth fastest time of the morning. Matt Lees was 14th in the 200-free to make the consols. Matt Maley rallied from an illness to make the consols in the 100-fly. Teudean will also swim in that consol.
"Abby had a good, controlled swim this morning," said Albiero. "She should have plenty left in the tank for tonight's finals."
Jenny Schimenti held on to make the consols in the 100-fly. Melanie Greyling qualified for the finals in the 200-free. Ashley Jackson made the consols in that event.
