Louisville, Ky. - The Louisville (4-8-1, 3-5-0) men's soccer team fell 1-0 to DePaul Saturday evening in Cardinal Park. The Cardinals dominated play outshooting the Blue Demons 20-5 but were not able to capitalize with a goal.
"It was probably the best game we played all year," said head coach Ken Lolla. "We dominated play and weren't able to finish early which kept them in the game. We had chances and didn't take them. We fell asleep and ended up paying for it when they scored their goal. Now we just have to move forward."
The first half ended in a scoreless tie. Louisville finished the half with a 7-2 shot advantage. The Cardinals finished with two shots on goal while Cardinal keeper David Simolike was not tested in the half.
DePaul scored the game-winner in the 70th minute of play when Jilliam Chille crossed the ball to Jared Johnson right in front of the goal for the score. Louisville then applied pressure almost immediately.
The Cardinals had their best shots to score back-to-back. Freshman Fred Braun fired a bullet that ricocheted off the cross bar in the 79th minute. Then seconds later freshman Bryan Kanu headed the ball in and DePaul's keeper Brian Visser came up with the save. David Guzman had another attempt in the 84th minute but Visser came up with another big save to give the Blue Demons the win.
Louisville finished the game with a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Louisville's Guzman finished with 10 shots and five on goal. DePaul's keeper Visser finished with 11 saves while Simolike finished with one.
Louisville will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 11 as the face Ohio State on the road at 7:00 p.m.
