Ann Arbor, Mich. - The University of Louisville (2-3-0, 0-1-0) men's soccer team handed Michigan State (2-1-1) its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon in the second round of the Michigan Invitational. The Cardinals defeated Michigan State 1-0 for a second place finish in the Michigan Invitational. Charlie Edwards, Frank Jonke and Nick Rice-Sarantis earned all-tournament honors for the Cardinals.
" Today we produced a workman like performance from everybody," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "We had significant contributions from the bench today and that is why we obtained a win. I thought the first half was a very even up and down game. Both sides were creating chances and playing well defensively. We were very solid in the back today. Matt Neely, John Jonke, Ryan Meyer and Tim Velten were like a rock in the back and are building a solid defensive reputation. Nick Rice-Sarantis capped off his performance in the midfield with a fantastic assist, a thru ball behind Michigan State to Frank Jonke."
"Michigan State created more chances in the second half because they had to play behind but I thought that we absorbed their pressure really well and that was the difference between the two teams. Michigan State is certainly one of the best teams we've played all year. They are well organized, well coached and a team that has the ability to do well in the Big Ten once again. This was certainly a great place to build from and we will go from here with two top teams in the BIG EAST next weekend at home."
The first half was tightly contested as both teams finished scoreless. Michigan State held a 5-2 shot advantage and a 2-0 corner kick advantage in the half. Sophomore Frank Jonke scored the game-winner off a thru ball fromRice-Sarantis in the 59th minute.
Michigan State answered with an aggressive attack, outshooting the Cardinals 9-4 in the second half but rarely got past the back line. Cardinal keeper Edwards came up big for the Cardinals with two saves, one in each half, for his second shutout of the season. Michigan State's keeper finished with one save.
The Cardinals will host Providence in Cardinal Park on Friday, Sept. 16th at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free.
