Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville (2-3-1, 0-1-1) men's soccer team tied Providence (2-0-3, 0-0-1) 1-1 in double overtime on Friday evening in Cardinal Park. The Cardinals scored a goal with less the a minute left in regulation to send the game into the overtime period.
Louisville controlled most of the first half. The Cards had two shots on goal but were unable to convert. With 20 seconds remaining in the half, Providence's Matt Otte received a yellow card giving the Cardinals a penalty kick. Sophomore David Guzman took the penalty kick and the Friar's goalkeeper, Chris Konopka, came up with a big save to end the half.
"I thought the first half was played fairly even," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "I thought that missing the penalty kick late in the first half changed the game and gave Providence the momentum. From that moment on we played tentative. We created a lot of chances but we were rushing them. Once Providence scored we played with a lot more urgency and confidence. The players believed that they were going to score."
In the 67th minute of play, Timothy Ritter scored off a cross from Ryan Maduro inside the box to put the Friars up 1-0. The Cardinals were aggressive offensively but could not connect. With less than a minute remaining in the second half, sophomore Anthony Celebre connected off a corner kick from Guzman and shot the ball through a crowd in front of the goal for the equalizer.
"I thought that Anthony came in and really played well for us tonight," said Colavecchia. "The Providence goalkeeper was magnificent tonight, he came up with some really big saves. Their defense did a really good job of getting behind the ball. I thought that the crowd was a 12th man for us tonight. Once they got into the game they really gave us a lift."
The game was pretty even in the first overtime period with Louisville holding a 1-0 shot advantage. The Cardinals had a lot of opportunities in the second overtime period but Konopka came up with four saves for the Friars to end the match in a tie.
Louisville finished the game with a 26-6 shot advantage over Providence. Cardinal keeper Charlie Edwards finished the game with three saves while Konopka finished with eight, a new Cardinal Park record.
The Cardinals will host No. 1/5 UConn in Cardinal Park on Sunday, Sept. 18th at 2:00 p.m. Admission is free.
