Lexington, Ky. - The University of Louisville (3-3-1) men's soccer team fell 3-0 to Georgia Southern in the UK Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals outshot the Eagles 12-8 but were unable to convert them into goals.
"It was a disappointing effort today," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "We just didn't compete as well as we should have. Georgia Southern was able to finish all their chances and we just didn't turn any of our chances into goals. We lack a little bit of certainty in the way we want to play. Because of that we played with hesitancy and would lose control of the ball.
"This is a little concerning at this time of the year when you don't know who your goal scorers are going to be. We have eight days to prepare for the Marquette game which is important. We need to continue to work hard and find someone who can finish all the chances that we are creating."
Georgia Southern scored in the 40th minute of play when Tommy Irwin connected off a free kick from Brad Mitchum. With a 1-0 lead at the half, the Eagles added more cushion to the lead in the 58th minute off a goal from Jason Schultz. Schultz put the game out of reach in the 73rd minute scoring on a rebound from a penalty kick.
Cardinal goalkeeper Charlie Edwards finished the game with three saves, while Georgia Southern keeper Adam Webb finished with five saves. Ryan Pomeroy led the Cardinals with two shots on goal.
Louisville's David Guzman and Tim Velten were named to the all-tournament team. The Cardinals will be back in action on Sept. 29 against Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis.
