Milwaukee, Wis. - The University of Louisville men's soccer team tied Marquette 2-2 in double overtime Wednesday evening at Valley Fields. The Cardinals improve to 3-3-2 on the season and 0-0-1 in Conference USA play.
"Marquette is one of the best teams we have faced all season," said head Coach Tony Colavecchia. "Defensively we had our hands full with forward Chris Lee but our defensive back did a good job. It was a good result. They showed more spirit, more heart and more character than I have seen all season. We need that grit and tonight we just gutted it out."
The teams played an even first half as neither could find the goal, but were able to get shots off. Then freshman David Guzman struck first in the 51st minute when Jelani Grant found Guzman on a breakaway. Guzman was able to beat the Marquette defense and found the right side of the goal for the first score of the game.
About eight minutes later Golden Eagles came right back when an attempted clear out by Louisville resulted in a corner kick for Marquette. Blair Kohlmeyer was able to find Danny Mullin who was able to get his head on the ball for a goal in the 60th minute.
Again eight minutes later as Guzman intercepted a Marquette attempt at a clear out and left the ball for fellow Canadian Anthony Celebre. Celebre shot across the goal and found the left side of the net as Louisville took a 2-1 advantage.
In the 77th minute, Marquette came right back and Chris Lee chipped in a shot from five yards out on passes from Pat Knoelke and Nathan Sabich. The game stood tied with 13 minutes left in regulation.
Marquette controlled the ball for much of the two overtime periods, narrowly missing the goal twice in each overtime period. Shots by Lee, Bryan Dahlquist and Matt Blouin were inches from being game winners.
Cardinal keeper Charlie Edwards finished the evening with career-high six saves. Marquette outshot the Cardinals 21-11.
Louisville will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 3 against No. 13Michigan at 3:30 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
