Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville (3-3-3) men's soccer team tied No. 13 Michigan (6-1-2) 1-1 on Sunday afternoon in Cardinal Park. The game was the second tie for the Cardinals this week.
"It was a very strong team performance," said head Coach Tony Colavecchia. "Several players stepped in today and really stepped it up. Matt Rose played exceptionally in the midfield and took the captain's role from injured Devin Matthews. Our defense gave a solid effort with goalkeeper Charlie Edwards and the back four. I thought Matt Neely was the best player out there today. Up front we are still searching for the right combination and it was no surprise that Marco Terminesi scored the goal.
I got to give it to Michigan, they had a tough game with UK on Friday and then came here to play us. They are both tough places to play and to get away with a win and a tie shows they are deserving of the national ranking. They are a very classy bunch of young men. This game gives us a lift going into the Memphis game. We will have our hands full but we should have more confidence and a better idea of what this team should look like."
The Wolverines took the early lead in the 30th minute when Bobby Trybula scored off a cross from Ryan Sterba. Michigan led 1-0 at the end of the half but the Cardinals outshot the Wolverines 8-5. Sophomore Marco Terminesi scored in front of the goal off Ryan Meyer's pass in the 67th minute to tie the score.
Both defenses tightened up and forced the game into overtime periods. Neither team was able to score in two overtime periods, forcing the tie. The Cardinals outshot the Wolverines 17-12. Freshman keeper Charlie Edwards finished the game with five saves while Michigan's keeper Joe Zawacki finished with three saves.
Louisville will travel to Memphis, Tenn. to take on the Tigers on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 8:00 p.m.
