Memphis, Tenn. - The University of Louisville men's soccer team fell 1-0 to No. 24 Memphis Wednesday night at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Cardinals fall to 3-4-3, 0-1-1 on the season while Memphis improves to 8-2-0, 4-0-0.
"I have to give Memphis credit, they played a great second half," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "The are a well coached team and are well deserving of the national ranking."
The first half ended in a scoreless tie. The Cardinals finished the half with a 6-4 shot advantage over the Tigers.
"Tonight was a game of two halves," Colavecchia said. "We dominated the first half and it was very unfortunate not to have scored two maybe three goals. David Guzman struck the bar twice and had the goalkeeper well beaten both times. We just failed to capitalize on the amount of possession that we had. We probably had the ball in Memphis's half about 80 percent of the half. We had numerous chances."
The Tiger's Andy Metcalf scored the lone goal off an assist from Michael Coburn in the 53rd minute of play.
"The second half we came out flat in the first 10 minutes," said Colavecchia. We just didn't compete like we had been doing. We allowed Memphis back into the game. There was a mistake in the backfield that led to the goal that beat Edwards. We had some mental lapses that probably cost us the game. The last 15 minutes was all Louisville. We had lots of scoring chances but couldn't finish."
Cardinal keeper Charlie Edwards finished the game with a career-high eight saves while Memphis keeper Sebastain Vacchio finished with three saves. Memphis finished the game with a 17-13 shot advantage. The Cardinals finished the game with eight corner kicks while Memphis had four.
Louisville will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 9 against DePaul in Cardinal Park at 7:00 p.m.
